Artist Statement
Glass in an Architectural context often overplays its transparency. It is a modernist material that succeeds by its invisibility. As a container of space and light it becomes a barrier from the elements.
My intentions whilst working with this frustrating material is to reintroduce the Human element. Glass in buildings can easily exhibit the depth and richness of other construction materials, but demands a purpose and source to direct its creation.
To achieve this I walk a fine line between Architect, Artist and Designer. Often taking on the role of all these disciplines at once I undertake commissions by investigating the purpose and the history behind the space. Consequently using these elements to dictate and orchestrate the source of visual imagery and surfaces to be incorporated.
Where ever possible I aspire to sustainability by recycling objects or by the creative and unorthodox use of materials that relate to the location. This either results in Wall dividers, Furniture and Lighting, or sculptural pieces which are complimentary and sympathetic to the space.
There is often confusion to my title as Artist or Designer, which prevents my work from being pigeon-holed. I see my work process as being as a “Compromiser” and as a Visual diplomat.
